| What can a press release really do? |
| |
A press release is a way to get your company's story to the press with out it looking like an ad. Indirectly, and more importantly, it's also a potential channel of communication between your business and the public. Those potential customers or consumers you want to be aware of your business. A well crafted press release will get your story under the radar of an editor or in other words they won't hand it to the advertising department.
This means that a press release can increase the public's recognition and perception of your company and its success. Whether or not that success has actually yet been achieved. Enough press successes and press coverage on your behalf, and PR can transform your business into success.
In business, it's the perception of your company in the public's eye that counts. PR plays on this principle that the perception of failure often equals actual business failure; conversely the mere perception of success, solidity, or affluence can take your company to that next level, and make that appearance a reality.
There are other benefits as well. Thinking of changing careers or moving on once you've built your company? PR success can even generate a lucrative purchase offer from another company that heard about your success through the power of PR. |

| What can a press release not do? |
| |
A publicist is a great ship, but a lousy life preserver. It will get you where you need to go, but it will not save you if you're already in the water.
PR is by no means a quick fix. If you can't pay your bills it's probably not a good time for a publicist. This doesn't mean your situation isn't fixable or that a well-placed article won't help transform things for you. It means that you should probably do the PR yourself and pay your bills first.
The main reason is PR takes a large time commitment. For numbers people it is not something that provides an immediate return on investment. Larger PR firms today usually require campaign commitments (and deposits) of at least six months of support. Which is why so many look unfavorably when you tell them you need PR but I do not have a lot of money? The response unfortunately is too often, "then you're not ready for PR!"
We try to balance our company size with our own clients, and know what it is to have a small company or unique endeavors. While the attitude on the part of larger firms is actually not due to simply profit so much as common sense. Public relations involve constant repetition and familiarity. It's about the gradual building of a foundation of rapport between your company and the reporters who might be interested in featuring you. This means that your first press release can generate no interest. Or your second. And or your third. If you're lucky, at that point, and following some conversations with your publicist, the reporter does recognize your name, and begins to notice your releases. But the news still seems to fall into the round filing cabinet on the floor.
Then the fourth press release goes out, and hits a reporter in just the right way, and strikes at the right cord. They think, "This is someone I want to write about or interview." And then comes the fifth press release and it's hot, timely, and your in.
Suddenly, there's your first major feature for your news portfolio. And it only took a matter of months.
PR is fun and, exciting. But it's also time-consuming, tedious, and involves several repeated release which must be repeated over and over again to gain a desirable result. This doesn't make it hopeless just challenging. |

| What is the difference between PR & Advertising ? |
| |
PR Builds Credibility and Wins Hands Down! Advertising controls the message while PR does not. Because of this, PR creates something more valuable, credibility. Many times readers see an ad and they know that what they are reading is just overblown hype. Readers are more likely to trust independent authorities such as reviewers, columnists, reporters or broadcasters. It is these same authorities that are directly influenced by a good public relations and specifically, a well-written press release. |
